Me, Gladys Knight & The Pips…The Last 61 Days

This one is going to be a long one so take a potty break, grab a snack and then get ready to read.

This weekend I took a little time off from shooting so that we could get some family stuff done and start a major purge and pack plan. This is such a bittersweet announcement and I’ve been trying to find the right words of how to blog about it and never really came up with anything clever so I’ll just say it.

I have been in Los Angeles for exactly 11 years. I have loved living here, there is nowhere on earth just like LA, for better or worse LA is one interesting beast. There are so many things that I love about LA but at the same time there are so many things that I could live without as well. My husband and I have decided to leave California. We want a slower paced, more community driven and more affordable way of life.

When I was talking about this to one of my best friends she said, hey why don’t you move here! She has said this to me on many occasions and we just laugh and move on to the next topic, but the last time she said it I really gave it some thought. Now after a short time to think I had it in my head that this was exactly what I wanted to do, but convincing my husband, someone who was born here and has never lived anywhere but here was going to be a hard task to accomplish. Or so I thought. I explained to him my grand ideas and plans and it probably took him about 15 minutes to say, you know what you are right, let’s do it. So with that here we go.

I’m nervous, I’m happy, I’m scared, all those things at once! When I drove my little moving truck to Los Angeles from Nashville back in 1997 I was all of those things, but now I have children, a husband and whole lotta junk to pack! I also have a wonderful and successful business with so many amazing clients that I will be leaving behind. That is the bittersweet part, the part that breaks my heart. There is always a way around that problem and several of my clients have solved that problem for me. So for my clients who would like me to continue photographing their families I will return upon request if I have a few families who would all like to have sessions around the same time. It’s a win win for me because I still get to see their smiling faces and photograph their beautiful children.

So just like Gladys Knight and The Pips who left on that Midnight Train to Georgia, I too will be doing the same. The clock is counting down and I have 61 days left here in Southern California and then we will be leaving and relocating to a little town called Dallas, GA (which is just about 30-45 minutes outside of Atlanta, or should I say HOTlanta ;-) ). My amazing friend and photographer Julia Greer and I will be working together and we will also be running our own photography businesses just like we do now. I am so excited about that, she is such a wonderful person.

My children are excited too, they are excited about our new home that we have found, the new friends they are going to make and the trip across the country. My daughter asks me every day if it’s time to go to Georgia, it’s so cute how excited she is. To all my LA blog readers, you would not believe the difference in real estate there compared to here, it is completely mind blowing at how much home you can get for your money there. For the price of one home here you could buy 4 homes there (no I’m not joking!).

I will be shooting right up until we leave and I have many wonderful clients who I will be meeting soon and photographing their little ones during my last two months here. I have a few spots open so be sure and email me asap if you are interested in booking one of the dates. I can also give you the contact information for some other wonderful photographers in the area for after I’m gone (or like I said, find a few friends and I’ll gladly come back! for your photo session!).

So…. wonderful people of Atlanta, I’m going to start booking for August now so email me if you would like to schedule a session! Ok I’ve rambled enough and I think at some point I stopped making sense and just started mumbling. To my wonderful friends and clients in LA, this is not goodbye it’s a see you later, and besides I will still be here for two months!

I’m going to start sharing California related photos for the next couple of months, and I will for sure be blogging our cross country trek (I am *so* excited about all the photo ops that will be headed our way!). So this is a photo of my street, I will miss palm trees, because the last time I checked there weren’t too many of those in Georgia.

and enjoy a little Gladys Knight & The Pips (this video is from 1973, the year I was born!)

True, true, not many palm trees in GA – however – you will be VERY close to some people in FLORIDA who love you dearly and are eager to show you all the palm trees you can stand…royal palms, coconut palms, palmetto palms…only about 12 hours from Jules to Terrilyn. :::feel the wub::: ;)

marci - May 31, 2008 - 8:44 pm

There are no palm trees in Indiana but I do know someone who would still love for CaliforniANGEORGIA to stop by on her way through. :)

Debbie - May 31, 2008 - 10:47 pm

You already know how excited I am for you. You better let me know when you’re back in town – and bring Julia back here for a visit sometime!

lisa - June 1, 2008 - 12:46 am

It’s a long flight from ATL to HNL, but I hope you come visit our palm trees again sometime!

I’m so excited for you and I wish you and your family all the best.

Amanda Elkins - June 1, 2008 - 6:21 am

DUUUUUUUUDE!!!! That is great! Congratulations! I have been wanting to do this FOR.SO.LONG! My hubby won’t have it though! Good luck with your new business! Let’s get together before you leave. I would love to see you again! :)

Kimberly Hill - June 1, 2008 - 6:57 am

LA’s loss is HOTlanta’s gain – much luck on your travels!!!

Lisa Kelly - June 1, 2008 - 6:58 am

I’m really excited for you Angela. It’s great to have a fresh start, there is something so exciting and cleansing about it. And as you say your lifestyle will be much more affordable where you are moving. You’d be a star no matter where you go so good luck luv.

heather - June 1, 2008 - 2:02 pm

Wow, congrats to you for making the move. We talk about doing something similar, but it’s so hard to actually get the guts to do it. I’m sure you’ll love your new lifestyle. And the people of hotlanta will be lucky to have you! If you’re driving cross country and looking for some fun family stops, pick up the book Road Trip USA. We used it for our cross country trip and had one of our best “vactions” ever.
Good luck!

How exciting! I, too, have lived here over 10 years from the East Coast. My husband has also never lived anywhere except Los Angeles, but we, too, are thinking about moving somewhere slower-paced, more community driven and affordable. Your leap may inspire us make one too.

I’ve so enjoyed your photography and think your photo style is wonderful. I’m so looking forward to seeing your road trip pics.

Way to be brave and envision a different kind of life.

Kendell Silveira - June 1, 2008 - 6:45 pm

Well THIS California girl is going to miss you. I wish you all the best in your new adventures and I hope that we are able to connect sometime before you leave.

Agnes - June 1, 2008 - 10:02 pm

ANGELA!!!! I’m going to miss you sooooo much! Although I have myself moved from LA to the Sacramento area for similar reasons (big new homes here for under $200K), I continue to read your blog and enjoy your beautiful photography. I will send you an email soon, but until then, congratulations to you and your family on this new adventure.

Oh how my heart skipped a beat when I saw the word “Dallas” but alas, it’s of the Julia Greer variety :) Wishing it was us lucky Dallas TX girls gaining you but I’m happy for Julia and for you too!!!

Lisa - June 2, 2008 - 6:54 pm

Welcome back to the south, Angela!!!! August is a terribly hot month to move back, but you know the humidity will make those beautiful curls on your sons head even more adorable than they already are!!! Let us know if you decide to do any workshops. I would love to attend, since I’ll be your neighbor in AL!!!

carrie sandoval - June 3, 2008 - 7:06 am

Best of luck, AtlantAngela!!
I had a session in LA last weekend and I can sure see where you are coming from. Now, after reading your post, I really appreciate my lil ole Fallbrook even more! But, I wonder how much longer Fallbrook has until it falls into “the OC” lol!!

TonyaMarie - June 4, 2008 - 12:06 pm

Seriously though, I wish you and your family the best.

Anna Mayer - June 4, 2008 - 8:24 pm

Oh my goodness! How exciting, seriously. I have been there before, when my husband and I packed up our lives and left Minnesota for N.California with two young boys and a baby on the way. It will be a wonderful adventure and I wish you the best of luck. (although I am sad, because I was planning to book a session with you whenever we FINALLY make a trek down south :-( )

i’m so excited for you and your family!! i know you are doing the right thing – PLUS – how much fun are you and julia going to have working and playing together?

Erin Duke - June 5, 2008 - 12:34 pm

It will be great to have you over here in GA! It is a great place to live and work!

2sweetnsaxy - June 5, 2008 - 4:35 pm

I wish you much love, peace and happiness in your new home. I’ve been around L.A. my whole life too but like you I’ve been thinking of getting out of dodge too. Just too many dad-gum people here, too much traffic and they seem to keep getting rid of so many old landmarks. Maybe one of these days I’ll be packing up that truck too. Much luck to you.

Heather - June 5, 2008 - 4:55 pm

Just don’t take your inspiring blog away from us! Seriously, good luck with the move. It can be harder than you ever realize. I moved an hour and a half away (with no traffic) from LA a little over a year ago and I thought “no big deal”. Things have been good, but this past Memorial Day my 11 year old son breaks down saying how deeply he missed his old friends. I was heart broken. I always wanted my kids to grow up in 1 house and have the same old friends forever. So much for that with the cost of houses! Away we moved. It’s still tough.

You guys will be great though!

:-)

Good luck on your upcoming family move. It will be an exciting time with many new experiences. New school for the kids, new house for the family, new jobs for you and your dh, new friends and “new” kind of climate compared to what you are used to. You will love it and welcome to the south!

Shellie - June 6, 2008 - 8:57 pm

You will love Atlanta! It’s such a fun city! Congrats on the big move!
