Like A Rock Star…

As I mentioned in my last blog entry, this weekend I was in San Diego helping out at a photography workshop. I had a wonderful time and it’s always so much fun making new friends, we camera nerds have so much fun together and laugh and giggle about things that most people would roll their eyes about. We stayed up way too late being silly and sharing our photo secrets and learning new ones.

We stayed at the W Hotel and I think I have never felt so unhip in my entire life. That is one happening hotel with lots of cool people standing around. I was almost beginning to wonder if they had hired people to actually just stand there and look hip and fun. When you walk in to the hotel there is music playing, everything is decorated very stylish, it’s a great vibe. I was expecting the music to stop playing as I walked in the door and to hear something over the intercom like this….. we have a code 12, code 12, we’ve got a Mom in zone 4, repeat this is not a drill, Mom in zone 4. Followed by security asking me if I’m lost. Ok so that only happened in my head, everyone was *very* friendly and nice, always saying hello and asking if there was anything that I needed. I love San Diego, I really do, however the one thing that drives me nuts are all of those darn one way streets downtown. Thank goodness for my GPS.

Even though I had a wonderful time I sure missed my husband and my kids. When I came home my son saw me drive up and I could hear him happily yelling “MOMMY’S HOME! MOMMY’S HOME!” The front door swings open and my kids came running out, my daughter (who is 3 1/2) stopped just before she got to my car and starts screaming at the top of her lungs. I’m sure you’ve all seen the old news clips from the 60′s when the Beatles would be on television and all the screaming girls would be standing there crying and screaming at the top of their lungs. Yep, that’s what she was doing. She was so excited to see me and was jumping up and down screaming and crying that *I* felt like a rock star. My kids are so awesome, coming home to lots of hugs and kisses is the best thing ever.

Here are a few images from the weekend, hope yours was as good as mine.

PS – Happy Birthday to my awesome friend and fellow photographer Pam!

hi Angela!
Since you had such a great weekend and an even better coming home I thought I might suggest you do a repeat–you sounded so happy on your blog– a getaway is always good for the soul, right? OKAY, here’s the deal- I am being selfish. Knowing that your kids probably couldn’t handle a back to back weekend with mom gone I am asking anyway. You see, you have been my inspiration for this business. My FAVORITE (you and cheryl) and I am attending the SF workshop this weekend! Oh how I would love to meet you AND see you in action!

Tonya - February 25, 2008 - 10:27 pm

You crack me up with your code 12! That shot with Barb is such a great perspective.

Pam - February 25, 2008 - 11:12 pm

Thanks for the wishes Angela! You were a fun roomie and I had a great time.

Jen - February 26, 2008 - 9:16 pm

Ah, SO envious that you girls got to party! I can’t wait for the reunion!

Beautiful images, as always Angela.

In my bag…

I often get emails from other photographers asking what kind of gear I use so I thought I would go ahead and post it here so I can refer people to it quickly.

So right now I have three different camera bags that I use.

First up is my Shootsac. It’s good to use on location when you want to change lenses on the go and not be weighed down by a big huge bag. Although I’ll go ahead and confess to using it as a purse sometimes and throwing my point and shoot camera in it with my iphone and just go! I have the calm cover for it but I think I actually like the plain ol’ black cover because it matches pretty much anything and the flip side of it is a lens cloth.

and here it is loaded up

Then I have my Crumpler 7 Million Dollar Home. (Yes that really is the name of it). I’m a carry everything including the kitchen sink kind of girl, always prepared so the 7 Million really didn’t work so great for me because I use a grip on my bodies and that makes them huge, so it simply didn’t have enough room. I still have it and I’ll use it when I’m just taking one body with me. How can you not love a camera bag that is red? That alone gives it major cool points.

Now my favorite bag of all that I absolutely adore is my Jill-e large black roller. It holds everything! But let me warn you, this is one big bag. The photo does not even come close to letting you know how big. HUGE is a better word I think! It has polka dot material on the inside, too cute!

So what do I put in this bag? Well here’s a list of my gear…

plus…
15 Compact Flash Cards
2 sync cords
1 Polarizer & Case
3 UV filters & Cases
and a bunch of other small loose things with room for more
Also there is a pocket that will hold my laptop – (will fit any laptop up to size 17 inch).

I also have my strobes, softboxes, softliter and other goodies that just don’t quite fit in the bag, but I don’t always use them so that’s a good thing!

So now you know what’s in my bag!

OMG! I think you have every piece of photographic equipment anyone could ever need! Thank goodness there’s a bag out there big enough to fit it all in!

How do you decide which & what pieces of equipment your going to use for a shoot?

Ginger - January 7, 2008 - 5:18 pm

Hi Angela! I saw you featured on Blu’s site, and had to check out your work!
I love it, and I had to come tell you that i absolutely adore the 2nd song on
your website! I’m a cellist, so I love that type of music– and it goes perfectly
with your kid pics!

Blu’s a bit busy right now, but at some point in the future I’ll get my site up on running
(just purchased in on Jan 1st)– I’m looking forward to finding music that fits my
style– which can be a tricky task! But you did a great job;)

Blessings to you and your work:)

Hey Angela, did you know that SOON Shootsac will be offering custom covers – with your logo, and maybe colors? I actually take my cover completely off when shooting a wedding, so I never bought a cute one…this might tempt me.

Jaime Shrader - January 8, 2008 - 2:54 pm

Hey Angela,
Which lense would you recommend first, your 85mm or the 60mm, and why?

thanks!

Angela - January 8, 2008 - 3:05 pm

Well I use the 85 and 60 for different things. With the 85 I don’t typically use it indoors as I often don’t have enough room to back up. I love it outside and the bokeh from it is GORGEOUS! The 60 I use that one a lot for newborns because it’s also a macro lens so you can get close up to those cute little baby toes and parts. It’s also a great portrait lens too – and for these lenses I use them on my D3. For Canon shooters I have to confess my undying love for the 24-70L, as you can tell by my Nikon gear I’m a prime lens kinda gal, but that 24-70 is one of my favorite lenses.

Michaela - January 9, 2008 - 9:22 am

First, your website and photography is amazing! I love your logo, your style and I love reading your blog!

Thank you so much for sharing what’s in your bag, I have been agonizing over what to purchase to get my business started. I spent almost 10 years photographing children on film, but this whole digital world is new to me. I’ve had the Nikon D70 for 2 years and it’s already starting to act funny. I read somewhere that if used often a digital camera can burn out in about 2 years?

I can’t decide between the Fuji finepix pro S5 or the Nikon D300. (The D3 price is not in my budget). I considered the Canon 5D, but I also want to build my lens palot and eventually purchase the D3. I just keep going round and round over these 3 cameras, which would you choose?

Angela - January 9, 2008 - 9:44 am

I’m a raw shooter and I find the S5 to be a little slow, now for Jpeg users it isnt quite so bad. If I had to choose between the D300 and the S5 I would without a doubt go for the D300, it’s amazing and the change in noise handling over the D200 alone is worth it. It’s like the D3′s little sister! Since your ultimate goal is the D3, I would just stick with Nikon. :)

Moises Tagle - January 30, 2008 - 3:57 am

I am in awe of your work. Its amaizing. Im an amature photographer but i can say, you got a fan here. Im in the L.A. Area. Maybe i can meet you someday. Thanks for sharing your wisdom. I can tell your a down to earth Gal.

Love at first click… : Nikon D3

Excuse me for the nerdy camera geek post which is to follow….. you’ve been warned!

I was lucky enough to be in the first group at my local camera shop to get one of the AMAZING new Nikon D3′s that came out a couple of weeks ago. Oh. My. Goodness. I don’t live that far from the Nikon headquarters so I’ve been considering driving over there and bowing down and telling them I’m not worthy. All I can say is WOW. It is one fantastic camera, but at the same time I have to say, it’s about time they gave us a full frame camera!

The first three shots below are SOTC/SOOC with only resizing and sharpen for web. I’m beginning to think I should send a love letter to Nikon. For the photographers who read my blog and are on the fence and thinking of taking the plunge, it truly is all that and then some.

Oh and the willing subject as my regular blog readers will know is my little sweetheart 6 year old.

I used the 85 1.8 on these.

and of course my little one thinks she’s Tyra Banks and needs to strike a pose every time she sees the camera…

CUTE!!!
Been thinking about taking the D3 plunge myself. Sounds like Nikon finally hit the jackpot with this camera. Thanks for the input!

Laura Ping - December 24, 2007 - 4:15 pm

Merry Christmas!

Gorgeous shots – of course. If I knew how to use my camera, and thought I had any potential as a photographer – I would offer you $$$ for your old camera ;) My New Year’s resolution is to become friends with my camera and know what ISO and aperture mean. Duh!

I hope Santa is good to you – although who could want with a D3 in hand! I would like just a little of that thick curly hair on your son’s head – which would mean Santa will be brining me product and a perm. lol.

Jayme Tighe - December 27, 2007 - 6:55 am

Congrats on your new camera!!! You must be in heaven!

Santa, A Haircut, A Parade and A Harley…

On top of all my lovely client work this weekend my two little ones kept me busy! Saturday night we paid a visit to Santa. Of course you know I had to take a photo and share. In order to take my own photos I had to buy one of theirs first, which I gladly did because I like taking my own! Right after we saw santa my little one got her very first haircut! She was sporting a Donald Trump comb over and the stylist suggested bangs so that we could get a normal part going on instead of the part on the side of her head. At first I wasn’t sure about cutting bangs for her, but boy did it make her blue eyes stand out. Ahh my sweet baby girl looks so grown up. Then today, ok wait it’s Monday now, ok so yesterday afternoon we went to the San Pedro Christmas Parade. I took my camera but I didn’t take a lot of photos of the parade, I was trying to get some shots of my kids while they were in a cooperative mood.

So here goes a bunch of stuff to share, let the holiday season begin!

Hanging out with Santa…

Watching the Christmas Parade (and check out those super cute bangs she has now, I love the cut!). My Grandma reads my blog and I know she is going to call me and tell me that Morgan looks exactly like I did when I was little and yep she’s right. That’s my little mini me! Check out the grip she has on the candy that the firemen gave her, don’t even think about taking her candy away!

Being silly…..

My kids thought this was so funny to see this big camel walking down the street in the parade…

I loved how this car was wrapped, the bright colors were awesome, I need to be driving that!

And I’m exposing a big secret……do you want to know what Santa’s sleigh really looks like!? Shh…. don’t tell anyone…
Santa drives a Harley!
