This will never happen again…

She’s looking at me.
He’s thinking at me.
She said that I’m a kookoohead.
He told me I’m not his friend anymore.
She is trying to take my seat.
He’s trying to take my seat.
She said she’s older than me.
He won’t let me breathe.
She keeps singing too loud.
He won’t be quiet.
MOMMMMYYYYYYYYYYYY.

Believe me when I say that it’s a re-enactment of each and every time that I try and photograph my own children.  Yes I’ve spoken about this many times before and I often compare it to the task of herding cats, it’s almost impossible.  Do I have this same problem with my clients children?  Not at all! They aren’t used to all my tricks and sounds and chicken noises and weird things I wear on my head, they are a breeze, a snap, a walk in the park.

My two on the other hand will pout, scream, cry, pinch, poke, push, shove, complain.  Recently, something happened.  I managed to capture something….to this day I cannot believe it, and I fully expect for it to vanish from my screen at any moment.  There is no pouting, there is no grimacing, it’s just them, together, maybe a little bit of cheese peeking out from their smiles, but trust me, I am not complaining.  I’m almost wondering if I should call The Smithsonian to see if they want this rare photograph.  It doesn’t happen that often and sometimes I find myself wondering if it will ever happen again (of course that thought usually crosses my mind when world war 3 has broken out over some random toy that is forgotten within five minutes in the playroom).

Being a mom of four and a photographer…I SOOO feel your pain. I have the exact problem!

Clumsy

First off – to all my blog readers who emailed me last time after I posted about New Kids on the Block, ok I bought their new album on itunes, I LOVE IT.  (is it ok for a grown woman to confess that?)  It’s perfect, no one is home and I’m going to play loud music while I clean the house music.  I’m not sure that’s what they had in mind while they were making the album, but if you dance like I do when you are mopping the floor, this is a good one for that.

If I were asked to write down a list of adjectives that describe myself I would sadly have to add clumsy to the list.  Oh how I envy ballerinas and figure skaters, they are so graceful and smooth.  Me on the other hand, well I seem to trip over air.  A few months ago I tripped over the sidewalk at the mall, in my defense there was some concrete that was uneven and sticking up.  Down I went and it just so happened to be at the busiest parking lot of Del Amo Fashion Center in Torrance, CA and I ended up breaking my favorite pair of sunglasses that are no longer made, I was sad, they made me look so cool ;) .

When I was pregnant with my daughter I was walking (ha again at the mall) and someone had forgotten to put down the wet floor sign and I had on some slippery shoes and yep, down I went.  When I was in girl scouts (800 years ago) I was carrying back a pepsi bottle to the machine for my troop leader (remember those really tall old school pepsi bottles that you pulled from the machine), the floor was wet from someone spilling a cup of ice.  Down I went and to this day I have this obnoxious scar on my wedding ring finger as a reminder of that fall.  They should have done a butterfly bandage but they didnt and the scar is ikky!  I also have a scar on my foot from a broken bottle that clamped around my foot (I didnt see it in high grass).

Oh my list could go on and on and on of my oh so graceful moments (please note my heavy sarcasm here).

Yesterday I went to Michael’s (yes that is the best store ever for stuff, scissors that make cool edges, stickers, punches, paper oh my!) and I was walking along minding my own business when my flip flop got caught under the wheel and somehow my foot slammed in to the cart.  Ouch was my first thought and then my foot started throbbing.  So I am now the proud owner of not one but two lovely broken toes.  My “this little piggy had none” and my “this little piggy went wee wee wee all the way home” toes are broken on my left foot.  They are a lovely shade of purple, some would say grape-like.

I’m not sure why I’m telling this story, it has nothing to do with photography, but I guess it helps you to get to know me better.  While I may be clumsy, I always get right back up without missing a beat and laugh at how I’m not the most graceful person on the planet.  I think I missed my calling, I bet Ringling Brothers has a place for people like me.

So today, broken toes in tow, we went to the Paulding County Arts & Crafts festival at Paulding Meadows.  Funnel cakes, fried Coca-Cola, fried dill pickles, you name it they had it.  I’m trying to figure out how you fry Coca-Cola, but that is a mystery that I’ll solve another day as I didn’t get over to that booth.  I had grand ideas for taking lots of pictures, but in the end I only took a few and just enjoyed all of the festivities.  Here’s my son taking a ride on a horse.  I bet that horse is more graceful than I am!

I hope you are all having a great weekend, try not to trip over air like I do!

Connie - September 6, 2008 - 9:04 pm

Oh he does look a bit unsure of that horse doesn’t he? It sounds like a fun day and I’d love to hear if you ever solve the fried cola mystery- that seems like quite a feat! Speaking of feet, so sorry about yours! Sounds very painful!

Brandi - September 7, 2008 - 10:56 am

I think it’s okay for a grown woman to like NKOTB considering the fact they aren’t.. kids… anymore :P :P Hehehe.

Kimberly Hill - September 7, 2008 - 11:09 am

Yeah, but can the horse photograph like you? Doubtful ;) Sorry about the piggies. Ice those babies!

Jennifer - September 7, 2008 - 8:47 pm

oh Angela, reading this about you sounded like me and the “accidents” Ive had, I am so clumsy too! HAHAA, I have a messed up toe too, except its my big toe! We can both be clumsy graceful! lol Sounds like your fitting in and enjoying your new town!

Deanna - September 7, 2008 - 10:09 pm

OOOh isn’t the NKOTB album good? But you have to buy the CD because there are PICTURES inside!!! *drool*

I’m so sorry about your toes…you and I would get along great. I’m a total klutz.

Tosha Francis - September 8, 2008 - 7:46 am

Sure it’s ok for a grown woman to LOVE NKOTB. This grown woman is going to see them in concert in October with my prego girlfriend! That’s how much we love them over here!!!

Maria - September 8, 2008 - 12:33 pm

HA! It must have been something in the air last week. I broke my toe as well trying to make a bed. And of course, it was the day we were having 50 cadets over to the house for a cookout. My toe looked pretty amazing by the end of the day. =) Hope yours heals quickly!

Life imitating Art

Korean photographer Yeondoo Jung created a brilliant set of photographs called Wonderland back in 2005.  The photographs are inspired by drawings from Kindergartners in Seoul Korea.  He recruited high school students to help him recreate the drawings in to photographic form.  They are creative, beautiful, amazing and inspiring.  Be sure to click on his name above and check them out.

My friend Keet is a fantastic children’s artist and I asked her to create a new piece of work for my kids.  She just finished the one for my daughter Morgan, and I just had to share it with you.  Morgan is in love with Disney Princesses (as most little girls her age) and cats.  I asked Keet to create something that combined Snow White and cats.  She came up with this super cute combination of Snow White & The Seven Cats.  Of course Snow White is my daughter, who also happens to resemble Snow White so it’s a perfect fit.  When I showed Morgan she said “I want to do that”, so outside we went with her seven cats and her Snow White costume.   Now she’s a feisty one and was already done with the idea within 30 seconds of going outside, so we didn’t really get to recreate the image, but oh well it was fun for the minute that she was willing to participate (hey wasn’t this her idea anyway).

Here’s what Keet created for Morgan:

My shot is not quite as wonderful as Yeondoo’s work, but a mini tribute to him, here is my semi co-operative Morgan aka Snow White with her seven “kitties”.

Hope you are all having a great Labor Day! Don’t forget if you know someone having a baby today email me to win a complimentary portrait session & 11×14 photograph.

Keet - September 1, 2008 - 5:53 pm

How totally wonderful that she wanted (for a fleeting moment, at least) to re-create the scene! I am honored. Thanks as always for the very kind compliments, too.

Wow Angela, that is so an amazing resemblance of your daughter. Your friend is so talented. Does she hire our her services to other’s or is this just a hobby? I’d be interested in hearing more if she does.
