One Year Later

hope all of you had a wonderful Father’s Day and that you gave your husbands and or fathers a special day today. Normally we go out for Father’s Day, but this time we stayed in and my husband had his favorite sushi! We are continuing to purge and pack for our big move to Atlanta at the end of next month.

Last year around this time I photographed a brand new baby girl named Avi. Yesterday I traveled to her home in Playa Del Rey for her one year portraits. My how much she has grown! She is sooooo super cute and I love how busy she is. She’s so excited that she has just started walking and she was on the go and proud of it! She was a total sweetheart. You should see how happy her Mommy is when she looks at her, so wonderful.

To Avi & her Mommy, thank you so much for having me back for your very special one year portraits, it was wonderful seeing you again!!!!!

You shouldn’t do drugs …guy…

My kids love pancakes, in fact they would eat breakfast for dinner every night if they could. So sometimes we will go to have pancakes on Thursday nights (because well kids get free pancakes on Thursday night, score!). We always seem to go around the same time and it’s the same waitress who serves us so I guess my kids are the regulars.

There is always a man who is there washing the windows. He’s an Australian man (as he has told my son many times before) and he always has on his little portable old school radio with giant headphones. While he is cleaning the windows outside he will have his radio on and he always has a cigarette hanging from his mouth. Every time we see him my 6 year old son tells me that cigarettes are not good for you and they can ruin your life and it kills your lungs. They learned about saying no to cigarettes and drugs at school and my father passed away a few years ago – he had emphysema from smoking since he was a teenager, so when my son asks about him we tell him that it’s not a good thing to do.

My daughter copies her brother in everything he says and does and today, oh boy she decided to go big. The window washer came inside and he said hello to the kids like he always does and my little one decided it was time to inform him how bad his smoking habit was. She put down her fork and looked up at him with her big blue eyes and said:

YOU SHOULD NOT DO DRUGS, CIGARETTES ARE DRUGS…GUY…. AND IF YOU DO DRUGS YOU WILL HAVE NO LIFE…MAN…..

She was very matter of fact in her own almost four year old way. The gentleman being ever so polite and kind responded to her and said that she was right and that it’s a very bad habit and that he hopes she will never ever smoke. When he was done speaking she looked at him and said, you should have a lollipop instead and she handed him her tootsie roll pop that she got from the delivery from my photo lab today. (they always put one in the box with every order that I get)

This little sassy girl of mine, while overly outspoken is already wise beyond her years and I am proud to be her mom.

So remember….as my almost four year old says…. You shouldn’t do drugs…guy.

The Chronicles of Moving: Episode 1 – It’s illegal to move out of LA

Welcome to Episode 1 of the Chronicles of Moving. I can promise you one thing, it will be long, it will be boring, but always at the end there will be a photo of a super cute baby or child to make you smile. I’ll be documenting the process of moving our lives from Los Angeles, CA to Atlanta, GA and you’ll be with me every step of the way (if you don’t want to be, come back in August and I promise the blog will be back to normal! ;-) )

I’m beginning to feel like I’m the only person who has ever moved out of Los Angeles. Yes, I promise that’s how I feel. Now I know this possibly can’t be true as my friend Rachel moved from LA to Australia just a couple of months ago. So what, that makes two of us right? ;-)

Oh alright millions of people come and go from here every. single. day. That being said you would think it would be a easy process with all that coming and going. Well it’s not. Being the planner aheadererer (that’s a new word I just made it up feel free to use it in your daily conversations), I’ve been trying to get all of our ducks in a row trying to make this process as easy as possible. So shortly after we found our new home I started calling to schedule dates for the utilities to be turned on – gas, water, electric, phone, cable, trash, internet. I swear I feel like I’m trying to pass a bill through congress. If I had a dollar for every time someone said 1. just wait til you get there or 2. now why in the world are you leaving Los Angeles, well for all those dollars I could retire to Maui and say to hell with everything because I would be one rich woman.

I’m not sure people really understand that having electricity when you arrive to your new home is sort of a cool thing to have. I dunno, call me spoiled, but I fancy running water and electricity.

The biggest debacle of all is trying to get a permit to have the moving truck parked in front of our house here in LA. I’m trying to be a good citizen, getting a permit, paying the fees, all that legal stuff. I have a list that is compiled of 14 phone different phone numbers of all the offices that I have been passed off to. Finally 3 weeks ago I ended up with one that said oh yes yes we are the correct office, now go on our website and select building materials and then select dumpster. What? This can’t be right, no no mam, that is what category moving is under. Ok whatever you say. So I submit my permit request, “thank you for blah blah, it will take three business days.” Yes that was three weeks ago.

So I call up today to find the status, five more phone numbers later and I’m told that permits are not allowed for moving and it’s illegal to park a moving truck on your street. What? No no you simply must be joking. The past week alone I’ve seen moving trucks, pods, storage containers, all sorts of moving “things” being parked on our street (it’s a long street and there have been multiple ones at a time). “Well Mam they did that illegally and you could be fined and your truck or storage container could be towed and impounded.” I’m sitting here wondering how the heck you get a storage bin out of the impound lot, but that’s something to ponder another day. So I asked the woman, so you are saying it’s pretty much illegal to move out of Los Angeles? Well Mam I’m not saying that she said. But honestly in so many words she was in fact saying that.

Being the overwhelmed wuss that I am I started crying. Shhh… pretend you did not just read this confession, but yes I broke down and cried. Because after calling all these numbers and dealing with this over three weeks, I just had enough and I was not sure what the heck I was supposed to do. So just like all the rest she passed me off to YET ANOTHER phone number. I called that number and was sent to another one. Finally I think I have the right office, but man there is a lot of buck passing going on here. This “supervisor” promised me that I could in fact get a permit but I have to call back the week before the move to get it. Seriously freaking over that one, because he said oh just ask for me and I’ll be able to do it and then he followed that with – but I might not be here then because we get transferred around a lot.

I wish that I had one of those machines like they had on the Jetsons where they put it in the little machine and it would teleport to the next place. That would be so much easier than getting a permit to park a moving truck in front of my home.

Stay tuned for Episode 2…

As promised, here is today’s sweet baby. This is Miss Quinlan, one of my recent newborn clients. She makes me smile, her silly Daddy and beautiful Mommy make me smile too.  They are wonderful clients and I will miss them dearly.

Pammy - June 10, 2008 - 9:43 pm

Wow…it’s like the Hotel California all right. You can check out anytime you like but YOU CAN NEVER LEAVE.

Cute baby! Going to miss you.

Jen Lane - June 10, 2008 - 10:05 pm

WHA?!!! Holy smokes Angela, with all that trouble I’d be tempted to just stay there forever. LMBO! Who would have ever thought it was so hard to LEAVE someplace! I’ve moved a lot, a whole lot,in my thirty three years and never ever even thought about permits! WOW. Good luck girlie, I’ll be sending you “get a permit” vibes. You get all of those, no one else needs them! LOL! Seriously though, good luck!

And awwwww! She is beautiful! Darling image!

Anna Mayer - June 10, 2008 - 11:48 pm

Awww. . . sweet baby and a cool name!

Crazy on the moving thing. That is one of the bummers of California, they have more rules and laws and departments of such-and-such than any other state I think!! CRAZINESS.

PamN - June 11, 2008 - 4:39 am

It will all be ok in the end – keep saying that! And adorable baby btw, love her name too!

corey civetta - June 11, 2008 - 5:19 am

I am so sorry you are having to deal with all this craziness!! I pray it all goes smoothly from here! {{{hugs}}}

Jennifer - June 11, 2008 - 7:04 am

oh no so they are pretty much telling you that you cant move with out doing something illegal, yeah I would be freakin out too, and I prob wouldnt be as aclam either! Well, I hope something good comes of this situation for you. I moved around for the first half of my life every single year, I have now been at this one place for the other half so far, and I dont plan on moving because of what I went through for so many years! Too much stress! Girl make sure you keep your self caffined up and keep your self crazy so you dont go insane! ;)

Brandy - June 11, 2008 - 9:24 am

Oh man, that is just craziness Angela!

Tobi - June 11, 2008 - 10:06 am

Oh Angela…Yikes!!! I got a little stressed out just reading this!!! All the best…and I am looking forward to the next episode…your life makes mine appear rather dull…and I am fine with that!

Kimberly Hill - June 11, 2008 - 11:22 am

SOMEBODY wants you to stay in LA, LOL! I agree, definitely very Hotel California.

kathy wolfe - June 11, 2008 - 3:45 pm

is planner aheaderer a word?? lol! you crack me up!

Danna Bowes - June 11, 2008 - 4:58 pm

awww..Angela that really sucks! I am so sorry to hear about all your troubles trying to get out of there!!

Now that image is just gorgeous!!! And I can bet your clients will miss you just as much as you will miss them.

Lisa - June 12, 2008 - 12:17 am

Oh, you poor thing! That is crazy. I just packed and left, no permits, no towing or jail time or anything. You should try for a filming permit instead- those seem pretty easy to get.

Good luck!

Leah - June 17, 2008 - 11:53 am

Awww….moving is no fun! Especially when it’s illegal to move. I hope the guy is still there when you call back and that it all goes smoothly.

Something I’ll Miss: Disneyland

First off I wanted to say thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of the wonderfully sweet comments, emails, phone calls and letters I’ve received since I announced that I will be leaving Los Angeles at the beginning of August. Seriously I am in tears over all of the kindness and love that has been sent my way, I feel like the luckiest girl in the world. Thank you to each and every one of you who took the time to wish my family well, it means the world to me!

As I mentioned we are trying to pack in a lot of personal family things before we leave California and of course we couldn’t leave without putting our Disney Annual Passes to good use. Today we went for the last time before we move to Atlanta. We enjoy going so much and some of our super awesome friends joined us today to make it even better. It started out gloomy and cold but it quickly warmed up and was a beautiful sunny day! We sure will miss just being a 30-45 minute ride down the freeway from Disneyland. Of course now we will be closer to Disneyworld in Florida, my husband and children have never been so you know it will be on our to do list! Although we will all be able to get our Disney fix next month, we are going on the Disney cruise leaving from just a few miles from our home and will be cruising to various places in Mexico.

Now I’m sure you all remember the last time I took my point and shoot camera to Disneyland and tried to get a video of my daughter on the tea cups and it went a little something like this (and just ignore my voice because I swear I cannot believe that’s how I sound, ICCK! ICCK!) Someone has way too much sass for her own good ;-)

But today, she was in a much much better mood on the teacup ride (again, my voice = annoying so tune it out)

Of course Snow White had to make her final appearance before leaving

They even have a huge letter C right out in front, I think it stands for Calderon or maybe even Californiangela (ok or maybe California Adventure, but come on, humor me will ya? ;-) )

Carol - June 9, 2008 - 10:19 am

You mean she volunteered for the Snow White shot? I am amazed. Only a shot with a costumed character holding her down (preferably Elmo) would keep my daughter in one spot for more than a nanosecond!!! Love the giant C……my daughter’s initials are CCC so I would have **attempted** a shot on the C as well. Can’t wait for more pics. And, I don’t think your voice is annoying at all. Of, course, I live in Nashville, so I would probably sound funny to everyone in California, lol.

TonyaMarie - June 9, 2008 - 2:46 pm

Okay, that *C* is totally for you. I even notice they used your colors in the background. And little Miss Snow white is just as darling as can be.

Danna Bowes - June 9, 2008 - 4:35 pm

OMG…that first video made me laugh so hard!!! “no more pictures…PUT IT DOWN!!” those words sound…soooo…familiar!!

Love the snow white shot, so so sweet.

Lisa Kelly - June 9, 2008 - 4:56 pm

These are great Angela, I loved hearing your voice, to us Aussies you all sound a little funny LOL. Love the C shot, perfect. And snow white is as gorgeous as can be. We are going to Disney for our first time next year and we just know it’s going to be amazing.

Jennifer - June 9, 2008 - 5:59 pm

oh wow, your moving. I know its a sad thing for you and your family, but Im sure you will make the best of your new home right? I wish you the best and I hope you enjoy your trip too!

Jennie - June 9, 2008 - 7:45 pm

That first video is hilarious! Definately blackmail material for when she gets in high school! :)

Stacy - June 9, 2008 - 8:26 pm

Angela I’m so excited for you and your family as you embark on this new adventure! I love the videos! Such a photographer’s child :) , and her snow white portrait is adorable. The C most definately is there for you! I can’t wait to see what you have in store for the great state of Georgia!

Brandy - June 9, 2008 - 9:14 pm

Such a cute video, I’ve never been on the teacups because rides like that make me sick. Even that video made me a little queasy, lol!

PamN - June 10, 2008 - 4:05 am

Can’t wait until you get here! I know it will be sad to lose your Disney fix, but there is a LOT to do in Atlanta, too!

Kathy Wolfe - June 10, 2008 - 8:49 pm

ah, there’s a disney on the east side too! love these pics – your kids are adorable!

Jen Lane - June 10, 2008 - 10:08 pm

awww, look at Snow White! Easily the most beautiful snow white to ever grace the planet.
And I remember last years video very clearly! what a difference a year makes! So funny!

Anna Mayer - June 10, 2008 - 11:47 pm

Ah, photographer’s kids syndrome in action! Too too funny. Thank you for sharing that. It made me smile.

Joyce - June 11, 2008 - 4:43 pm

I would miss it too! I still miss living close to Disney World. You are going to have such an adventure with this move, though! Can’t wait to read all about it.
