Yearly Archives: 2008

*Please* don’t be like me…

Before I tell you about this bad habit of mine, I will confess that I’ve been guilty of this since I switched from film to digital.  I also know that it’s not an illness that is just prevalent among professional photographers, there are plenty of moms & dads, aunts & uncles, grandmas & grandpas out there who are just like me.

I try to photograph my children every opportunity I get, although I will say that these days they want no part of it.  Sort of how the cobbler’s children don’t have shoes analogy.  However, when I do get the chance to get some candid shots, what happens to those photos?  Are they in a album or on display for everyone to see?  Sadly, no they are not.  They are sitting here on my computer, on a external hard drive or even backed up to my flickr account.

With the digital age I think that most people I know are often guilty of this same exact thing!  I can’t tell you how many non-photographer friends I have that have called me crying because their hard drives crashed and they lost all of the photos of their children (it’s happened to me too, but they were recovered).  Consider the photos that you take as your digital negatives.  Back them up not only on your home computer, but to a private online site such as flickr, smug mug, etc where they are there in case something happens to your computer or home.  The most important thing is to also PRINT THEM OUT.  I certainly need to take my own advice and that’s on my resolution list for next year.

When your kids grow up and they want to see photos of themselves you don’t want to miss out on those fun times flipping through photo albums together!  I know my kids get the biggest kicks out of looking at photos from when they were younger (of the few I actually have printed out).  Can you imagine your son or daughter asking you “Mommy what did I look like when I was a baby?”, then you have to go over to the computer, try and find the files, nope they are on a cd somewhere, go and try and dig up the cd, nope wrong one, it must be somewhere around here right?

You want to be sure to not only have your wonderfully awesome professional portraits to show them (from your friendly neighborhood photographer, say oh me ;-) ) but you also need to have those special every day photos to look back on as well.   Children grow up so fast and you don’t want their childhood trapped on your computer do you?  (See how I’m guilting you in to printing your snapshots from your digital camera, is it working?  What if I offer you chocolate?)

I recommend www.mpix.com for consumer printing, Costco even does a great job!

So for your list of New Year’s Resolutions, be sure to add to the list: I (insert name here) promise to let my children’s every day photographs be seen and not trapped on my computer.  I will make sure that I print the photos from my camera often!

See that wasn’t hard now was it?  While I was going down memory lane and uploading old photos of my kids, I came across a few of my youngest that made me giggle.  I haven’t even gotten to the stacks of cds from my son, that could take a while because there are a ton!

I should have known back then that she was going to be one feisty little girl!  These photos are almost four years old and yep you guessed it, have never been printed until today, I uploaded them to my lab and they will be arriving soon!

Thank you for this wonderful post Angela. You have inspired me. Very beautiful pictures of your little girl.

Melissa M. - December 18, 2008 - 11:33 am

Yes, yes, and YES!! I’m a huge believer in printing out those wonderful snapshots!!
We do an album each year (It’s laid out January thru December) and the kids LOVE to look back
through them year after year. It’s one thing I’m definitely proud to say I keep up with 100%.
I *hope* they’ll thank me for it when they’re all grown up. I’m pretty sure they will. :)

Happiest of Holiday Wishes to you guys!!
XO

jen wilson - December 18, 2008 - 10:41 pm

Awww – her eyes still look *exactly* the same- but she looks so darn little here! You are SO right – we all need to print MORE!

I hope you and your family have a merry Christmas!

jen :)

Wendy - December 20, 2008 - 9:34 pm

Oh those eyes! Those lashes! Beautiful. :)

Pammy - December 21, 2008 - 9:55 pm

She was a beautifully baby–still a beautiful child. Love these!

PamN - December 23, 2008 - 8:13 am

I can’t imagine how people who don’t print EVER manage to locate a well-loved image…the filing system would have to be extraordinary and cumbersome! Do they actually name the files with the subject? Or by date? How do they find the image of their child at the zoo at age two, for instance? I know I would never be able to remember when that was (because my children are now grown, it seems nearly impossible).

allie - December 26, 2008 - 9:29 pm

four years ago?! you’re crazy, woman!! gorgeous though and better late than never. :)

ashley mcnamara - December 31, 2008 - 10:46 am

Print it out!

Terrilyn - January 6, 2009 - 12:36 pm

Anna-Karin - January 8, 2009 - 12:58 am

Another guilty parent here!
I dont print much of mine either, they are trapped on my computer. I need to change that for sure!
Look at those gorgeous eyes, she was a pretty baby!

carina - January 16, 2009 - 2:45 pm

Oh my gosh! I am so guilty of this. No more million excuses. I did manage to go to Ikea on Tuesday to get those neat hanging modern shelf and finally display portraits of my family. It’s true, it’s so easy to “trap” our precious photos of our lovedones but are so quick to schedule appointments, take pictures of other families and spend hours retouching (so guilty of this). I finally did something about though this week. Thank gosh. You’re not the only one Angela and I enjoyed reading this post. Blessings. ;-)

Nichol Krupp - January 18, 2009 - 8:22 am

Oh my goodness! How cute is she. She has her Mamma’s eyes. Love them and love the new blog.

Renee Bell - January 18, 2009 - 1:45 pm

TINA M - March 5, 2009 - 6:55 pm

A Message from Santa

My best friend Amy sent me a message earlier with the. cutest. thing. ever. for children who believe in Santa Claus.  You select the child’s name, age, what they are asking for this year and a few other details and then a special video is created just for them!  I love this, be sure to get a video of your children when they watch it for the first time!  My son’s name wasn’t in the name database so Santa doesn’t say his name, but his photo is in the video.  The coolest thing about this?  It’s free!

Here is the one for my daughter…

here is the link to create your own: http://72.55.134.30/home/

Since I don’t like to blog without a photo, check out my little client Anna and her Santa gear, isn’t she a cutie pie?

Giving *is* Awesome

Last year I gave away a portrait session and prints to a deserving family who was nominated by a friend.  This year I joined in the giving going on over at http://www.givingisawesome.com .  Kristen from Essential Imagery put all of this together and photographers from around the world are donating their time, talent and art to deserving families all around the world.  The concept is simple…

The rules:

* You cannot nominate yourself, and the person nominated must sincerely be incapable of purchasing my services. (Being unable to make mortgage payments for a two-million-dollar-vacation-home in Paris does not qualify as sincere financial need.)  Times are tough, many people have lost their homes, jobs and hope.  Custom portraiture is the last thing they are able to afford right now.

* The nominee must reside in Atlanta, GA or immediate surrounding areas. Tell me who you know, what they’re experiencing, and why they deserve my artwork. Please include a way to contact both your nominee and yourself as well.

*You must email the nomination and story to giving@angelacalderon.com

I am so excited about this and I hope that you will all take a few minutes and think of someone who you could nominate to receive this very special gift!

A Golden Day | Los Angeles Children’s Photographer

When I was in Los Angeles a couple of weeks ago I saw many of my wonderful repeat clients and a few new ones too.  The day that I visited the W family in Manhattan Beach we were surrounded by the Los Angeles fires to the north, south and east of us.  The sky was orange and everything was glowing and it made it really hot, it sure didn’t feel like November, more like July.

I think this is the fourth time I’ve photographed these kids and I just love them, they are so much fun and it’s neat to see how much they change each time I see them.  Little Miss A was just learning to sit up when I first met her and now she’s a toddler, time sure does fly.   Here are a few from our afternoon together.

Oh the weather outside is… | Atlanta Children’s Photographer

frightful…but this little one was sooooo delightful.  Ok so it wasnt really frightful but it was COLD, 27 degrees cold, that’s pretty extreme for my California blood.

This morning I traveled to Dunwoody to photograph this beautiful 15 month old girl.  She was so cute, and had the biggest beautiful chocolate brown eyes!  She was a talker too, I think she is really advanced for her age, she had quite the vocabulary.

Here are a few photos from our morning together, what a cutie pie she was!
